Production Shift Leader

Job Description

Bellway is a FTSE 250 five-star house builder, which operates 22 trading divisions across England, Scotland and Wales. The company has grown from a family firm, established more than 75 years ago, into a respected national brand, selling over ten thousand homes a year.

As the next step of long term growth and to support our sustainability priorities, Bellway shall be opening a new, highly automated, Timber Frame Manufacturing facility located in Sutton in Ashfield.

This new Division, Bellway Home Space, shall become operational later this year and there is an exciting opportunity to join the initial team at our new state of the art facility. We are currently looking to recruit a a Production Shift Leader to join the team.

The Role

We are seeking a Production Shift Leader to manage the day-to-day tasks of manufacturing products to meet customer time / quality requirements and achieve business objectives.

The factory will operate a 3-shift, 5-day-a-week manufacturing plan, with the Shift Manager overseeing both direct and indirect staff. This role also includes responsibility for monitoring Environmental and Health and Safety systems.

Principal accountabilities of the Production Team Leader’s role include:

Manufacturing

Continuously monitor the performance levels of all team members reporting to this position
Promote and support ongoing improvement initiatives in alignment with company objectives
Regularly assess manufacturing methods and techniques, recommending changes as needed to optimise throughout
Maintain headcount in accordance with labour cost targets
Effectively utilise labour, materials, equipment, and resources to ensure production meets labour cost objectives
Engineering

Enforce agreed-upon Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) activities, including daily machine checks and plant shutdowns
Support planned installations or engineering modifications to improve processes
Provide ongoing feedback to the engineering team to focus efforts on process improvement
Systems / Standards

Regularly monitor and audit quality, health, safety, and personnel standards to ensure best practices are implemented and maintained
Continuously drive improvement and reduce production costs through effective workforce, plant, and equipment management
Plan and implement corrective actions when issues related to quality, cost, or delivery arise, and document them to ensure traceability
Continuously measure and assess production methods and techniques, recommending and implementing improvements where appropriate
Develop processes and controls to maintain accreditation for agreed external standards
Communication

Participate in daily meetings to share knowledge, provide expertise, and promptly act on decisions made
Use Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to illustrate current performance and develop action plans for improvement or adjustment
Maintain open communication and share feedback with other departments as needed
Management

Identify and implement training and development initiatives in line with the Performance Development Review (PDR) process
Set training targets and analyse needs based on company objectives, evaluating both on-the-job and external training programs
Monitor absenteeism and manage performance-related disciplinary actions when necessary
Environmental, Health & Safety

Act responsibly and safely to minimise any risk of injury or ill health to yourself or others
Follow specific Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities outlined in the EHS Manual as part of your role
Measurables

Line rate through 4Q including downtime and rework
Manning levels in line with headcount plans
Labour costs aligned with targets
Production quality at both factory and site levels
Housekeeping and EHS audits
Waste level monitored and minimised

Experience, Qualifications and Skills

Experience

Must have proven experience in production supervision or management within a high-volume environment
Skills and Aptitude

Exceptional communicator, both written and verbal, with strong interpersonal skills
A strong team player with the determination to lead change
An ability to perform well under pressure
Computer literate
Highly organised, able to manage multiple tasks and prioritise in a fast-paced environment
Strong commitment to quality standards and EHS requirements
Effective communication and listening skills
The Role and Working Conditions

Willing to be flexible in respect to day-to-day duties and working hours to meet business needs
Plant-based role with occasional travel to sites for quality checks and training purposes
